If you enjoy hiking tours and want to see the Hollywood Sign up close, our private guided hike with a Los Angeles expert is an immersive experience like no other. With a small group of 2-15 people, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ask your guide questions as you pass through the multimillion-dollar neighborhood of Beachwood Canyon and climb the canyon-filled landscape of Mount Lee and Mulholland Highway. Along the way, you’ll have excellent views of LA and the famous Griffith Observatory until you reach the final destination: the Hollywood Sign. Be sure to pack a lunch, so you can eat while looking out at the LA skyline beyond the sign.
For a more family-friendly Hollywood Sign tour, spend the morning on a guided walk through historic Griffith Park as you learn about Tinseltown legends and true tales from your tour guide. You’ll get your steps at a comfortable pace, as you walk past landmarks like the Greek Theater and Griffith Observatory — your guided Hollywood Sign walk ends at the observatory, so we suggest heading there for the afternoon. And have your camera ready for your view of the Hollywood sign, the highlight of the best Los Angeles tours.
On both our guided Hollywood Sign tours, you’ll learn about LA’s history while visiting the tranquil Griffith Park and seeing the city from different vantage points. A must for your trip to Los Angeles!

Expect to do a lot of walking on a Hollywood Sign tour, so wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothes. That means dressing for the season you’re visiting LA. In winter, temperatures are mild, but summers are hot, dry, and sunny. Along with your camera, don’t forget sunscreen, water, and a snack if you think you’ll get hungry.
If you book our private guided Hollywood Sign hike, be prepared to climb some mountainous terrain. It’s more strenuous than our walking tour, which takes you through Griffith Park and lets you view the famous Hollywood Sign from a distance. Be sure to choose the hiking tour that’s right for your fitness level.
From natural beauty to historic landmarks, there’s lots to see in Griffith Park. Ask the guide of your Hollywood Sign tour questions about what you’re seeing and where to take excellent photos of everything from the Hollywood Sign to Griffith Observatory, from views of the rich LA neighborhoods to its skyline.
Our hiking tours last a few hours in the morning, so you’ll have your afternoons and evenings free. We recommend a visit to the world-renowned Griffith Observatory, open every day from 10 a.m-10 p.m. Admission is free, so there’s no reason not to end your day observing the sky.

Frequently asked questions about the Hollywood Sign
Can you climb up to the Hollywood Sign?
Most guided hiking tours will take you to the base of the hill, but our private Hollywood Sign hike gets you close enough to see it spelled D-O-O-W-Y-L-L-O-H — that’s because you’ll be standing behind the sign. How’s that for an unexpected view?
How big are the letters?
The 13 capital letters of the sign are each 45 feet tall and 30 feet wide.
Are there any restrictions on photographing the sign?
If you don’t intend to photograph the sign for commercial purposes, it’s OK to take photos. Keep in mind that the sign is in a restricted area that’s monitored 24/7, and you’re not allowed to touch it.
Is it lit up at night?
The sign is not lit up at night, so you’ll get your best view during the day, especially if you take a Hollywood Sign tour.
What's the history behind the sign?
Located on Mount Lee in Griffith Park, this iconic LA landmark has starred in the city’s skyline since 1923 when it was built by the ‘Los Angeles Times’ publisher, Harry Chandler, to advertise his Hollywoodland real estate development. It wasn’t long before the sign came to represent the film industry, as well. The sign celebrated its 100th birthday in 2023. Today, it’s maintained by the Hollywood Sign Trust, which does a lot of work to preserve it so people from around the world can continue to visit it.

The Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park Hike meets in front of Franklin’s Cafe & Market on 2650 N Vermont Avenue. For our Private Hollywood Sign Adventure Hike, you’ll meet your tour guide in Lake Hollywood Park.
How long before the tour should I arrive?
Plan to be there 30 minutes before your tour’s start time to ensure you can find the meeting point and your tour guide. Our tours start on time, so you may not be able to catch up if you arrive late.
What is your weather policy?
Our tours run rain or shine, so please check the local forecast and plan accordingly. In rare instances when we have to cancel for extreme weather, we’ll offer you the chance to reschedule or a refund.
